BERSIH has always been an important organization in promoting political transformation in Malaysia. For example, the transformation of the Parliament, the reform of the electoral system, and the promotion of local elections are all issues that BERSIH has been working on over the years. However, for us in Taiwan, the words ""local elections"" have long been embedded in our minds and are no more than a common occurrence, why is it that in Malaysia, it is also one of the transformations that need to be promoted?
As a fact, the general elections in Malaysia that we have seen so far usually refer to the election of parliamentarians at the central level and the election of the state government, whereas there have been no local elections in Malaysia since 1976, so the mayors, the members of municipal councils, the members of city councils, and so on, at the local level, are all appointed by the state government.
One of the important purposes of our internship is not only to learn from their experience in promoting reforms, but also to learn from each other and exchange views on the political culture of the two countries. We are very glad that today we can have the opportunity to introduce to our partners how the local elections (nine-in-one election) held in Taiwan last year (2022) operated, as well as the regulations of the ""Political Donation Law"".
We are also glad that Prof.林偉修came to BERSIH today to visit us and to show his concern for our internship for the past three weeks. Together with our organization partners, we took the professor to a local restaurant to taste Indian food, and we also talked about the unique Malaysian election culture as six states will be holding their state elections next month, and we are approaching the registration period for the elections. We are grateful to Prof.林偉修 for his concern and advice on this overseas internship, and we will continue to learn from our partners in BERSIH during the next two weeks in Kuala Lumpur!
