Today, Fu Jen Catholic University and Malaya University visited the memorial Lin Lian Geok. The purpose of this activity let more and more people know the contribution of Lin Lian Geok.
Lin Lian Geok : "Being a citizen in Malaysia, instead of abandoning our mother tongue and culture, our responsibilities are fulfilling obligation and loyalty."
After doing a few types of research and read some related information. I found out that most Chinese in Malaysia preserved their traditional culture and language more than those living in northeast countries. Nowadays, Chinese can receive Chinese education due to the contribution of Lin Lian Geok. Although Chinese can study in independent secondary schools (Chinese-taught program), they still have difficulty entering local universities.
So far, even they haven’t got the permission from the government, they still devote their efforts founding a Chinese-taught college. This would be a great challenge for the Chinese in Malaysia!
A national type secondary school came to visit memorial Lim Lian Geok. When referring to secondary school education in Malaysia, there are three types: national secondary school、national type secondary school and independent secondary school.
National secondary school is set up by government. All the subjects are taught by Malay. As for national type secondary school, it originally was Chinese school. However, it gradually converted since 1962. That is to say, except for Chinese lesson, the rest are taught by Malay. But Chinese lesson is compulsory course. Finally, unlike the above, independent secondary school is private.
Because of protecting Chinese culture, they refused to being converted. They totally lose government’s subsidization, so all of educational fees come from Chinese groups. Nowadays it is led by United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia. The following is a brief introduction of secondary school education in Malaysia.
