The Final Week of the BERSIH Group
This week, we presented our findings with our mentors. Each group of students and mentors focused on a topic comparing the systems in Taiwan and Malaysia. Here are the topics we explored:
1. Is Taiwan's Two-Vote System Suitable for Malaysia?
Bonnie Tu analyzed the pros and cons of Taiwan's two-vote system, exploring whether it could help Malaysia address issues in its single-member district system. The discussion focused on how proportional representation in Taiwan balances local and national representation and whether this system could help Malaysia reduce electoral unfairness, party switching, and unequal district delineation.
2. How Do Local Elections in Taiwan Affect the National Level?
Ethan Qiu shared examples of how local elections in Taiwan influence national politics. By comparing the local election systems in Taiwan and Malaysia, we discovered that local elections play a significant role in shaping the national political environment.
3. Access to Voting in Malaysia and Taiwan
Tapuink discussed the absentee voting systems in both countries. Through comparison, we learned about the practice of postal voting in Malaysia and the challenges Taiwan faces in this area.
4. Comparison of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and Taiwan’s Agency Against Corruption
Eddie Hu compared the anti-corruption agencies in both countries, examining their efforts to combat corruption and promote integrity. We discussed the differences in institutional design, enforcement capabilities, and public trust between the two nations and explored opportunities for mutual learning.
This week's discussions deepened our understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the systems in both countries and inspired us to think about future reforms. We are grateful for the guidance and cooperation of the entire BERSIH team and our mentors.
