The “Let's chat with the Department Chair” event serves different purposes for freshmen and senior students.

For freshmen, their understanding of the department, including faculty members and senior students, is still limited. Although they may become familiar with some professors and upperclassmen through classes, their overall understanding of the department remains relatively limited. Through this event, the department hopes first-year students can gain a deeper understanding of the Department of Global Politics and Economics and feel more connected to the department community.

For senior students, who are already familiar with the department, the event provides an opportunity to discuss future plans such as study abroad exchange programs and post-graduation career development with faculty members.

At the beginning of the event, the attending professors were introduced to the freshmen. Students were then seated at round tables to enjoy the prepared meals, while faculty members rotated among the tables to engage in conversations with students from different year levels. Topics included personal interests, future plans, course selection experiences, and campus life at Tamkang University. When students from different year levels were seated together or nearby, faculty members also acted as facilitators, helping junior students connect with senior students and learn from their overseas exchange experiences.

Since third-year students in the department are studying abroad as part of the exchange program, attendance from that cohort was naturally limited. However, participation from first-year students was very positive, and they actively expressed their thoughts and opinions during discussions. Through conversations with freshmen, it was found that their main concerns continued to center around the junior-year study abroad program and future career planning. Faculty members mainly shared their own experiences and examples from alumni to encourage students to explore broadly, think critically, and actively participate in various opportunities.
